NGC releases 2016 W Buffalo Gold Proof coins
hand-signed by Congressman Mike Castle

The Coin
The $50 American Bufffalo Gold Proof is the collector version of America’s official 24-karat gold coin. The proof features a polished, mirror finish with stunningly contrasting frosted features. Based on sculptor James Earle Fraser’s 1913 design for the Buffalo Nickel, this gold coin revives one of the most iconic images in the history of American coinage.

The Most Elite SpecimensThese 2016-W issues will start out with the promise of a low mintage number. Among that population a few will be selected for grade certification and will earn a flawless PF-70 Ultra Cameo designation, elite modern numismatic specimens. A still smaller subset will be distinguished further still by NGC as being among coins released by the Mint on the very first day they become available. Among those, a mere 150 will be given yet a further special designation in honor of Congressman Mike Castle, known in the numismatic community as “the Coinage Congressman.” Castle is responsible for some of America’s most beloved and popular modern coins. Each of these 150 flawless PF-70 specimens will be hand-signed by the Congressman, and incapsulated in a special red core holder. No more than 1500 coins will bear these elite credentials, making them a must-have for investors and collectors of modern numismatic coins.

The Man
Mike Castle is Delaware’s longest-serving congressman and a former governor for the state, who is known as a champion of United States coinage. Before retiring in 2011 Castle would introduce legislation that launched the Platinum Eagle bullion and proof coins, as well as both the States Quarters and America the Beautiful coin and bullion program. As head of the House Financial Services subcommittee on domestic monetary policy, he represented not only Delaware but collectors, numismatists, and bullion investors nationwide. The States Quarters program was perhaps his greatest success, drawing many millions of Americans to the pursuit of coin collecting. Castle was recently profiled in a CDN Monthly article penned by Michael Standish, a vice-president of NGC, a fact which points to the enthusiasm of NGC to have him participate in this signature series of coins.
